Doctors Without Borders was officially founded on December 22nd, 1971, with the idea to reach out to countries that had and were suffering nation wide disasters. At the beginning, the organization was made up of 300 volunteers; doctors, nurses, journalists, and other staff, including the founding 13 doctors and journalists. The first disaster Doctors Without Borders was in 1972, and they were called to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, where an earthquake had hit, destroying most of the city and killing between 10,000 and 30,000 people. Today, Doctors Without Borders proudly continues its mission to help those in need.
